DV Capture Problem – noise in picture - SOLVED :-)

When I try to capture from my Sony PC2e to my computer I get noise into the captured file as illustrated in the 3 frames below. This noise occurs every 20 seconds to 5 minutes. I believe this is also known as digital dropouts or glitches.

I use Windows 2000, ASUS motherboard with AMD 1.2GHz processor, 256 Mb RAM. FireWire card is OHCI compliant, Wincan WTC-7000b, http://www.wincan.com.tw/wtc-7000b.htm.

Solution

Change the FireWire card - that will fix the problem! I changed the WinCan WTC-7000b card to a Pinnacle System StudioDV card - and voila, the problem disappeared!

I have tried to do the following stuff – so far without luck:

July 4th 2001:

Summary

Detail

Status

DirectX

I have updated to the DirectX 8a package from Microsoft, including the Digital Video Update for DirectX - http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp.

No result.

Capture program?

I have tried to capture with Adobe Premiere, Sonic Foundry Capture and MGI VideoWave III. The problem occurs in all three programs.

No result.

IRQ sharing, ACPI?

Some FireWire cards need their own IRQ. Under Windows 2000 ACPI share IRQs causing the problem. http://www.stevemcd.redhotant.com/win2000.htm.

Might be the problem. Try to change FW card!

Many has reported that you can share IRQ using ACPI under w2k without any problem.

Disk defragmentation

I tried to defragment my disks. First the disk that contains the captured results. Then the Windows 2000 system disk. Check http://www.dvereview.com/dveboard/messages/3829.html for information.

No changes on capture disk.

Windows 2000 disk no changes!

FireWire card based on TI chipset?

According to a posting in rec.video.desktop FireWire cards based on non-TI chipsets have this problem. My card is based on Ali+Realtek chipset! Also read http://videobuyersguide.com/capturecards/IEEE1394cards.html

To be investigated!. Might be related to IRQ sharing, ACPI problem as described above!

StudioDV based on TI chipset.

W2k OHCI drivers

Should we use the Microsoft OHCI drivers or Texas Instruments?

No action taken. Card not based on TI chipset - stay with Microsoft.

Pinnacle Systems StudioDV uses TI drivers - not Microsofts! In fact the manual recommend to use TI drivers in certain instances. So try to change to TI drivers instead of Microsoft if similar problem is found!

DMA enabled

Ensure harddisks are DMA enabled. http://www.wwug.com/cgi-bin/setframe.pl?http://216.246.51.202/forums/adobe_premiere/000408113446.htm.

Already enabled.

IRQ problem

According to some newsgroups, the FireWire card should be installed on a “high IRQ number”.

It is also recommended to stop potential devices that is also on that IRQ port.

Mine is on IRQ 9. Check ACPI above - this might be the explanation!

My USB serial port is too – removed it from my hardware configuration. No change. Had to keep ATI Radeon All in Wonder graphics card in hardware configuration - might be explanation. IRQ sharing IRQ 9 as described in ACPI above!

Stop system programs etc

I stopped almost all utilities on Windows 2000, and at the same time disabled net-card, sound card etc.

No change.

Harddisks on different IDE controllers.

On most motherboards you’ll find an IDE controller with two controllers, where you can mount one master and one slave on each. It is recommended to mount the harddisks on each controller as master, and with the CD-rom as slave.

This is currently not my configuration – I have the two harddrives on the same IDE controller. Will CD-Roms support DMA, or slow down the harddisks?

To be investigated.

Change harddisks to their own IDE controller.

Problem on tape?

I do not believe it is a problem on the tape. If I try to capture the same section over and over again, the noise does not occur in the same place every time.

Not likely.

Tape quality

It might be related to the DV tape - http://www.dv.com/db_area/community/Forum2/HTML/000175.html. It might also be related to the camera - http://www.dv.com/db_area/community/Forum7/HTML/000103.html. Nothing to do about it! http://www.wwug.com/cgi-bin/setframe.pl?http://216.246.51.202/forums/media100/000424023001.htm.

I have tried TDK and Sony tapes – the problem is consistent.

Change of FireWire card solved the problem.

Clean video head on camcorder.

Recommended by many in newsgroups. http://www.dv.com/db_area/community/Forum2/HTML/001455.html, or http://www.dv.com/db_area/community/Forum2/HTML/001495.html. Stay with one type of tape. In fact I have had more dropouts recently – and I have changed type of tape! Maybe I should switch back?

I have a new Sony PC2e, so it is also unlikely this could be the problem.

Purchase video head cleaner stuff from where?

Not nessesary - change of FireWire card solved problem.

Stripe the tape

Pre-recorded the entire tape with black lenscap prior to then using the tape. http://www.dv.com/db_area/community/Forum2/HTML/001495.html.

Must be tested.

Didn't solve my problem. Might be relevant anyway!

Bios update

VIA Bios – not sure I understand recommendation - http://www.wwug.com/cgi-bin/setframe.pl?http://216.246.51.202/forums/uleadmediastudio/000623224453.htm.

The VIA Bios is related to the harddisks.

Probably not relevant.

De-interlace

What should I do? What does it mean?

Noise from power supply?

Is the FireWire card next to the power supply?

http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?13@33.WxBXaGzPbcq%5E9@.eec0847/0. (Moving FireWire card to another position doesn’t really help, http://www.wwug.com/cgi-bin/setframe.pl?http://216.246.51.202/forums/uleadmediastudio/000623224453.htm).

Move the FireWire card to another position?

Tried that - no change.

FireWire card problem?

My colleague has purchased a machine with exactly the same configuration as mine, except that the FireWire card is a StudioDV FireWire card. He doesn’t have the problem!

That fixed the problem. Changed the FireWire card to a Pinnacle System StudioDV.

Ignore the problem!

Just ignore the problem! http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?13@33.WxBXaGzPbcq%5E7@.eec7464/0

Might be an option!

Fix the problem when editing.

http://www.wwug.com/cgi-bin/setframe.pl?http://216.246.51.202/forums/avid_composer/000207060132.htm.

I have tried just to remove the single noisy frame from the result. It is very hard to see any real difference (especially since I don’t have the right stuff due to the noise), so that might be a solution if it only occurs occationally.

Alternatively, capture the tape twice and copy the noisy frame from the second capture! It is unlikely that it will “infected”. Couldn’t someone make a utility that could automate that? Would be beneficial. If cannot be that complex. Simply read through the capture and identify spots where the frames are not equal. In that situation pick the frame that is most identical to the previous (or consequetive) frame – how do you recognize that?

Might be an option – not nice!

It most be possible to create a simple utility that reads the captured file and remove all dropouts! Check if such a utility exists. Alternatively suggest that it is created.
